Criticism: When to Ignore It and When to Give it Due Consideration

Criticism: When to Ignore It and When to Give it Due Consideration

Whether you work a day job or run a business, you’re going to have to face criticism. And often, you’ll find that you’re being criticized at a very important juncture in your life. For some reason or the other, you’ll face the worst criticism when you’re either about to do something really important or have already done it.

When Do You Face Criticism?

Switching jobs? Somebody is probably going to criticize your decision. Starting a business? No doubt someone has already told you this is a bad time to do so. Launching a new product? Well, you’ve probably already heard quite a few valid-sounding reasons why this is not a good idea.

Should You Ignore Criticism?

So what’s the best way to deal with criticism? Well, there are a few different possibilities. One is to just ignore the criticism altogether. It’s very difficult to do this but you can give it a shot. After all, if you’ve spent several years honing that product before putting it on the market, you can’t let someone who doesn’t know any better change your mind.

Should You Respond Rationally to Criticism?

Another way of dealing with criticism is to thank the person who gave it for their opinion, consider whether they have a valid point, ignore it if they don’t and change your plans if and only if there is any truth to their argument. This is probably the rational, mature way of dealing with criticism.

When to Ignore and When to Listen to Criticism

The fact is that you can’t give due consideration to everyone who criticizes you. Instead, do this only with people who deserve to be heard. For example, if a close business associate whom you respect tells you that you need to change your approach, you can give them due consideration. But if someone who knows nothing about the industry is criticizing you for no reason, then feel free to ignore them.

Don’t Let Criticism Get You Down
