Dressing For Success In The Modern Workplace

There was a time when business formal attire was more common in the workplace. Men wore dark business suits, matching coat and pants, collared button-down shirts, and ties. Women also wore matching business suits, with high-heeled shoes. While some professions still require this formal dress code, most business owners have chosen a modern business casual look for their personnel. 

Business casual creates a more relaxed atmosphere, and is practical for working. It also allows employees to have more freedom in choosing their wardrobe, and to express their personal fashion tastes. However, it is still important to maintain a professional appearance in the modern workplace. 

For men, a cotton button-down shirt is always a good choice. They come in many colors and patterns to suit your personal style. Solids and pin-stripes are safe choices. A tie is not required, but is still considered casual when worn without a jacket. Polo shirts are acceptable in many situations. This looks best worn tucked in, and with a belt. Chinos or khaki pants are excellent options. Choose pants in neutral colors, such as tan, gray, or navy. Brown or black loafers will compliment your business casual look. 

Women may opt to go more colorful with their business casual wardrobe, but clothing should create a respectful and professional appearance. Well-fitted tops, cotton blouses or sweaters, look nice in both solid colors and patterns. A business wardrobe should include dress slacks in different colors, and pencil skirts present well in the office. A blazer is nice for chilly weather, or to quickly add formality if you have an unexpected meeting. Jewelry adds personality to your outfit, but if you’re unsure how much is acceptable, keep it conservative. Loafers look nice with slacks, and a small heel or flats will look great with either slacks or a skirt.

When choosing your business casual wardrobe, keep in mind that you are the face of your company. When clients or customers come into your place of business, you make an impression. The first impression others have of you, is often based on your attire. Make sure that, while liking your clothes and being comfortable is important, you represent your company well.
