Human Resources: Appreciate Your Employees

Human Resources: Appreciate Your Employees

Every individual that gets up and comes to work at your company is a valuable asset. If you forget this important fact, it leads to less productivity, increased irritation among peers, and high employee turnover. Yes, the fact is, if you do not show your employees how much they are appreciated for the work they do, they will be in their cubicle using their time on your clock to fill out applications to work elsewhere.

If you keep in mind they are human beings, and not machines, it will be easy to recognize the needs of each individual in your employ. How often do you take the time to look into the faces of those that work for you?  This is a way to see if they are going through adverse changes in their lives. Employees rarely bring their lives to work with them, but a discerning boss can tell if that person may need to talk. Some may need to take a paid day off or two. To keep your hard-working staff, don’t forget that they are the human resources you have spent hard money to train, and you do not want to lose them.

Here are tips on how to increase employee satisfaction by showing how much they are needed.

Stop by an employee’s office/desk to chat them up. Many times when the boss is coming they are complaining or dropping work off. Sometimes, drop by to ask how they are doing, and comment on a picture of their kids on their desks.

Confide in them on a project. This is for your employee that has been there a while, at least a year, and hasn’t had a chance to be in the loop. Call them into your office. Tell them you have been watching them and you need their opinion on a project that is puzzling you. It is okay to say that, and when you show your employees this side of you, they appreciate the confidence you are putting in their abilities.

Gifts out of the blue. All employees look for something around the holidays.  Why not stop by the dollar store and pick up some inexpensive trinkets that would look nice on their desk? Pop into their office and surprise them with it. It will always be there, and will be a reminder of your generosity.

Mention their achievements. Everyone wants to be recognized for what they do. If your employee does something outstanding, at the next meeting, bring it up. Let everyone know what it was and that the company is proud of their contribution. Not only will this have that employee walking around with his chest poked out, others will want to do their best so they too can be recognized.

Sometimes it is the little things that matter to any human being. Employees are no different. Give a little of yourself, to get more in return.
